IMPORTANT UPDATE: Did you know there are new refrigerants??
Effective January 1, 2025 the EPA has mandated the phase out of R410A equipment and refrigerant due to it's harmful effects on the environment, just as they did with R22 in recent years. HVAC manufacturers are no longer producing equipment for R410A and R22 and when the current supply of these refrigerants are depleted, there will be no more available. Only replacement condensers and evaporator coils for R410A systems that are still under the manufacturers warranty will be available.
How will the refrigerant transition benefit me as a homeowner?
We know homeowners like you are looking for heating and cooling alternatives that reduce the carbon footprint and are better for the environment. The choices for 2025 Compliant Refrigerant R-454B for whole-home systems and R-32 for mini-splits, both have a lower GWP than the previous refrigerant and are formulated to provide excellent, reliable performance of your system for years to come.
Why should I consider repairing or replacing my current HVAC system?
You can still get your current system repaired with the existing refrigerant it uses. However it is important to consider the future cost should a leak be detected, the age of the system (12-20 years old), and the efficiency of the current equipment. As of January 2025, manufacturers are recommending that all systems be matched for efficiency, reliability and compatibility. No mix-matched systems are recommended. The replacement option is a long-term investment in your home, as newer systems are environmentally friendly resulting in a reduced carbon footprint. Additionally, the 2025 compliant systems come with advanced technologies and features that can enhance your comfort and the overall value of your home.
As with all your HVAC needs, it's important to have a certified HVAC technician work on your system to ensure they are following regulations, repairing the correct issue and doing it safely and effectively.
How will the transition affect the availability of parts and services for my current system?
For the foreseeable future, parts and services for existing systems using older refrigerants will remain available until the end of 2025 when more HVAC industry changes are anticipated. HVAC dealers as well as manufacturers, are prepared to maintain these systems even as the industry transitions to newer refrigerants.
Are the new refrigerants safe?
Yes. While 2025 compliant refrigerants have an A2L classification of mildly flammable, it poses no risk as the new equipment is equipped with Refrigerant Detection Systems (RDS).
What happens if the Refrigerant Detection System detects a leak?
The updated line of 2025 complaint systems are designed to detect refrigerant leaks and will adjust the unit's operation to ensure any refrigerant has been dissipated before resuming operation. If this occurred, you would notice that the system's indoor blower is running, while your thermostat is off. If you notice any change, it's important to have a certified HVAC technician work on your system to ensure they are following regulations, repairing the correct issue and doing it safely and effectively.
